If it's so darn cold and snow-y, then how could the Earth possibly be warming? Part of the confusion comes down to our understanding of weather and climate. People question the scientific reality of global warming because they don't know the difference. Weather is what we see day-to-day. It explains changes in the atmosphere over short periods of time and is highly unpredictable. A sudden thunderstorm or blizzard is what we might refer to as weather. Climate, on the hand, describes the behavior of the atmosphere over long periods of time. Using weather (i.e a few very cold days) as evidence against global warming (i.e a decade of hotter summers) is kind of like using one man's early death to disprove the fact that, on average, life expectancies are increasing. But climate contrarians will still protest: "Our climate has gone through huge transitions before!" That's true. These changes, however, occurred over long stretches of time and were caused by natural variation in the Earth's system. The changes in climate that scientists are observing today are man-made, caused by an increasing level of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the planet. As a result, the warming of our planet is happening on a much shorter time-scale than ever before. In fact, the whirlpool of frigid air, known as the "polar vortex," being blamed for sub-zero temperatures in the Midwest may actually be tied to warming temperatures in the Arctic. During the winter, this polar vortex normally remains locked up over the Arctic. This winter, the polar vortex is notably unstable (a pattern that was also observed in 2009-2010), possibly because of melting ice and warmer polar winters. The weakened vortex allows parts of cold Arctic air to break free, flowing into other parts of the Northern Hemisphere. sgfI seriously never thought I'd see a link from bushworstever2014-01-16 00:08:17the John Birch Society http://ift.tt/1i0q8FIFaantaStat2014-01-16 00:03:47sgfHey................................ bushworstever2014-01-16 00:03:41I don't care... :o)FaantaStat2014-01-16 00:03:03FaantaStat2014-01-16 00:01:40I'm sure lots of people are clamoring for the TeabaggeryForTwo2014-01-15 23:55:38respect of an enraged dirt bag like you. Coburn attributed the early failures of HealthCare.gov -- the online portal where individuals can shop for coverage under the Affordable Care Act -- to an "incompetency of management." The United State of America hasn’t raised its federal minimum wage of $7.25 since July 24, 2009, when “I Gotta Feeling” was the number one song in the country and Lebron James was still one year away from taking his talents to South Beach. More than four years later, even Republicans agree it’s time for a bump. According to a new Gallup poll released Monday, 58 percent of self-identified Republicans support raising the minimum wage to $9, compared to the 39 percent of them who are against it. That level of support still trails that of Democrats (91 percent) and Independents (76 percent). On the whole 76 percent of Americans are cool with all qualified workers making $9 per hour. That Republican support for a $9 minimum wage dips dramatically, to 43 percent, if the wage must be pegged to inflation, a fear that is essentially exclusive to the party. Elizabeth Warren: 'Too Big To Fail' Is Worse Tha 2014-01-15 23:49:37Elizabeth Warren: 'Too Big To Fail' Is Worse Than Before Financial Crisis WASHINGTON -- Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) warned in a speech Tuesday that the problem of banks considered "too big to fail" has only gotten worse since the 2008 financial crisis, potentially sowing the seeds of a future crisis. "Today, the four biggest banks are 30 percent larger than they were five years ago. And the five largest banks now hold more than half of the total banking assets in the country," Warren said in a keynote address at a conference on the future of financial reform put on by the Roosevelt Institute, a think tank. "Who would have thought five years ago, after we witnessed firsthand the dangers of an overly concentrated financial system, that the 'too big to fail' problem would only have gotten worse?" Warren urged the passage of a new Glass-Steagall Act that would separate commercial and investment banking. The Depression-era legislation was repealed in 1999 with huge bipartisan majorities, allowing depository institutions to undertake riskier securities trading. Warren, along with Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) have called to revive the legislation, but it stands little chance of passing. In her speech, Warren urged those who oversee bank rules to set a timeline to address the problem of bank concentration. She has previously shamed bank regulators for their poor performance, asking them in congressional hearings to recount the last time they took a Wall Street bank to trial. "Treasury Secretary Jack Lew recently said that if 'too big to fail' is still a problem at the end of the year, it might be time to consider other options. I applaud Secretary Lew for laying out a timeline, and I’d like to see other administration officials and regulators follow suit," she said. "If Dodd-Frank gives the regulators the tools to end 'too big to fail,' great -- end 'too big to fail.' But if the regulators won’t end 'too big to fail,' then Congress must act to protect our economy and prevent future crises." To Prejudice, lie______detector2014-01-15 23:47:41Intelligence Study Links Low I.Q. To Prejudice, Racism, Conservatism Are racists dumb? Do conservatives tend to be less intelligent than liberals? A provocative new study from Brock University in Ontario suggests the answer to both questions may be a qualified yes. The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood. I.Q., or intelligence quotient, is a score determined by standardized tests, but whether the tests truly reveal intelligence remains a topic of hot debate among psychologists. Dr. Gordon Hodson, a professor of psychology at the university and the study's lead author, said the finding represented evidence of a vicious cycle: People of low intelligence gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which stress resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice, he told LiveScience. Why might less intelligent people be drawn to conservative ideologies? Because such ideologies feature "structure and order" that make it easier to comprehend a complicated world, Dodson said. "Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice," he added. Dr. Brian Nosek, a University of Virginia psychologist, echoed those sentiments. "Reality is complicated and messy," he told The Huffington Post in an email. "Ideologies get rid of the messiness and impose a simpler solution. So, it may not be surprising that people with less cognitive capacity will be attracted to simplifying ideologies." But Nosek said less intelligent types might be attracted to liberal "simplifying ideologies" as well as conservative ones. In any case, the study has taken the Internet by storm, with some outspoken liberals saying that it validates their suspicions about conservatives and conservatives arguing that the research has been misinterpreted. unkSo many CL Gays posting about religion here YourHandleSucks2014-01-15 23:47:21unk The sad part is your chronic rude insulting from < Irony_Guy_Returns > 2013-11-29 09:19:27 thread to thread to thread, then preaching Christianity. There is even speculation that Francis himself could hear confessions at the Church of the Santo Spirito in Sassia, just outside the Vatican walls, where his bishops and cardinals have been directed to perform the sacrament of penance and reconciliation. “I think it’s likely the pope will discreetly hear confessions at some point,” said Giacomo
Galeazzi, a veteran Vatican watcher from Italy’s La Stampa newspaper. “The pope has long been an advocate of the pastoral aspects of the ministry and now the Curia will as well.” Galeazzi and others said the change, announced Sunday (Dec. 15), is part of a wider reform of the Vatican bureaucracy under Francis that includes the appointment of Archbishop Pietro Parolin as secretary of state. The two share a similar approach with an emphasis on humility. The Curia, which has a powerful and central governing power at the Vatican, is seeing its role change. “The pope doesn’t want bureaucrats,” Galeazzi said. “He wants pastors.” unkWhat Jesus says about homosexuality is.... he lie______detector2014-01-15 23:46:02What Jesus says about homosexuality is.... he doesn't mention it. Mark 10:21-22 Mark 10:21-22 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."
